Setting up a terrarium can be fun and here we list the supplies you will need to get started!

The Terrarium Container

Firstly, of course, you’ll need a suitably sized container. Terrarium containers can be made from a variety of recycled container including glass or plastic bottles, fish bowls, jugs, apothecary jars etc or can be purchased elegantly designed, specially made terrariums. You’ll find a huge selection of terrariums to buy so before you go ahead and make a purchase think carefully about the size and type of terrarium you need. If you are going to house living creatures take account of the size they will grow to and the environment they need to thrive.

Base Material

A variety of base materials can be used depending on the type of terrarium you are setting up. Course gravel is often used as the base with a thin layer of activated charcoal obtained from a gardening or aquarium shop. The next layer is sphagnum moss, used to prevent the top soil layer from filtering through the gravel. Finally place some potting compost on the sphagnum moss. Choose a compost suitable for the types of plants you will be growing.

Plants

Terrariums are ideal for growing moisture loving plants as the enclosed environment can provide a high humidity for plants such as ferns and bromeliads. There are many ground cover terrarium plants available and species of plants that are small enough to grow in a terrarium. You could also grow orchids or carnivorous plants that are natural to rain forests and high rainfall areas so love the high humidity in a plant terrarium.

Ornaments and Decorations

You may choose to have an all natural terrarium with pieces of driftwood, bark, rocks or artificial purchased decorations. You can also include a small mirror surrounded by small plants to conceal the edges to simulate a pool of water if you don’t have living creatures that will need a source of fresh water. There are also specially made terrarium waterfalls that can give a lovely effect in a large terrarium. Aquarium decorations can be used and you could have artificial caves for your creatures or any other type of decoration you like as long as it is not harmful to the creatures. For natural decorations check regularly that they are not rotting in the humid atmosphere
