Iguanas need a large, airy terrarium with room to climb and a basking area.
Iguanas can double their size in a year. Start off with a large enough terrarium so that you don’t have to buy a new one when your iguana has grow. A forty to fifty gallon sized tank would be preferable. They prefer an airy, open air home with foliage to make an outdoor feel. A mesh cage is preferable to a glass cage as they are better ventilated and a glass cage can heat up in the sun and cause discomfort to your pet. Check the mesh to make sure there are no sharp edges that can cause injury.
Use a UVB lamp during the day and an infra red lamp at night. The lights should be positioned about 18 inches above the wire mesh top. A UVB lamp is necessary so that your iguana can metabolize calcium in order to have healthy bones.
Iguanas are cold blooded and cannot control their own body temperature. Use a thermometer placed away from any direct heat sources and keep the temperature at about 85F during the day and 75F at night. Heating pads can be placed below the cage or an incandescent lamp can be used. Do not use hot rocks as they can severely burn your pet.
Iguanas need a fresh supply of water every day and a main meal of dark green leafy plants which can be lettuce, dandelions, mustard greens, cilantro etc. Plants containing oxalates, such as parsley, spinach and kale, should be kept to a minimum. Your iguana can also occasionally be given fruitsĀ such as apples, bananas, peaches. pears etc. a commercial diet, preferably alfalfa based can be used but keep it to about 50% of the total food offered. Any dried food should be soaked before use. Chop up any food given as iguanas cannot chew their food. Feed young iguanas daily and adults two or three times a week. A mineral supplement containing calcium should also be used as Iguanas are very prone to calcium deficiency which will result in poor bone development.
Iguanas like to climb so provide branches or other climbing materials. Place some driftwood or logs under the basking lights and include some foliage to give an outdoor feeling.
Ensure your terrarium is secure and any lids or doors are securely locked.
Iguana care is not difficult if you make sure you understand the needs of your petĀ and provide a large airy cage, suitable heated with enough room for growth.
